AV Rant #191: Overboard

July 30th, 2010 15 comments

Leif and Rob are back once more and we go totally overboard! Leif talks Hulu
Plus. Rob talks Playstation Plus. Local storage vs. Cloud storage – what’s
better? Can we get rid of local TV affiliates… please? Why? Because they’re
as outdated as movie theaters and newspapers! Alexandre has a burned-in
Kuro. Rob weighs in. Let’s build a front projection home theater room! Check
the links below for some recommended products. “Rental Only” discs suck! So
do unskippable trailers. But we love bad movies, so long as they make good
demo discs!

Thanks so much, once again, to Tom, Dina and Clint. Please post your
comments and visit the AVRant Facebook page! Visit Leif’s

AVR #188: Giddy

July 9th, 2010 4 comments

It’s a simple but thoroughly “giddy” AV Rant, with Clint filling in for Tom and Dina taking part in her very… last… podcast… until she returns from a summer sabbatical, that is. It is finally revealed that Audioholics is now shooting a series of video reviews. And they look really really awesome! We discuss the new Hulu Plus service for $9.99/month. Will it, Netflix and an an OTA satellite replace cableTV? Clint thinks so.

Tom is indeed alive and well and has successfully circumnavigated the globe to Australia. We’re sure we’ll be hearing from him soon.

Oh, and HDMI is dead. It’s kicked the bucket, shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin’ choir invisible. It is an EX-technology. And a new gun in town, HDBaseT, is set to replace it. Why? Because it is infinitely more awesome, user-friendly and flexible… and it’s already endorsed by the likes of LG, Samsung and Sony Pictures. Trust us, it’s the bomb and you WANT it – we explain why in the podcast.

AVR #187: The Next Level

July 3rd, 2010 6 comments

Welcome to an AVRant episode that’s a bit like one other. With Dina away for the summer and Tom fighting sharks off the coast of Australia, podcast fans, Leif Hurst and Rob H. do their best to fill our awesome regular hosts’ seats!

We get to know Leif before diving in to his very impressive DIY home theater. Leif discusses some do’s and don’ts of turning an existing room into a dedicated theater and describes some of the problems he faced in his own room. If you want to see an equipment rack and wiring done right, you will definitely want to check out Leif’s photos posted at his blog: stuffthatplugsin.com!

So what does it mean to take home theater to “the next level”? We say it’s all about the user experience. And there is no better demonstration than Leif’s description of progressing from a regular remote to a Harmony to a Crestron system! Read more…

AVR #186: Pitch Hitting

June 24th, 2010 10 comments

We finally did it – our best show ever! Or at least the best that Dina and Clint have ever done… we think… maybe you should listen for yourself and decide. Dina introduces us to her language handicap and Clint reviews a very expensive television that costs more than most people spend on their whole home theater. Why is the iPod 4 so amazing? Because Clint is out of contract. Ever want to make your own wall plate for HDMI and a host of other connections? A company called BTX finally let’s you do it… sort of. Last of all, Toshiba hits one out of the park with a TV aimed squarely to take on the competition – and it’s just 2-inches thin. Not bad for a company who only a year and a half ago shrugged off thin TVs in favor of video quality. Now they appear to have both.

Passwords, passwords, passwords…

April 1st, 2010 3 comments

So I’m sick of passwords. I’m sick of every single site I visit asking me to create a new password. And I’m definitely tired of the varying rules on what my login and password can be.

Some want your email, some want you to select a user name. Some passwords can be alphanumeric only, some must contain at least 8 characters, some don’t allow the use of ASCII symbols like ‘#’ and ‘&’.

It’s, quite frankly, a mess. Read more…
