AVRant #82: Monster Madness Infinity

July 10th, 2008

This week Tom is out of town “getting tan” (we seriously think he checked himself in at a mental institution, but who knows) and Clint DeBoer fills in with Dina. Clint finds that he’s not “bitter enough” to really replace Tom for any length of time. Clint’s Monster Cable long HDMI cable shootout is finally published at Audioholics. The same week, Monster Cable sues a children’s clothing store. Clint thinks someone may need to revoke Monster’s obviously (to us) overreaching trademark to end this nonsense. Pioneer announces a 400GB backwards-compatible Blu-ray disc… we wonder if this is truly big news or not. Clint sees his first movie at a theater in over 6 months and is not impressed. Sony re-releases its 2.40 firmware as 2.41. BenQ makes a pretty darn nice projector for the money (the W5000). Thanks for listening – Tom is back next week!

I’m open to receiving tips on how to be more bitter. I feel like I’ve really let Tom down on this one, but it’s just so darn hard…

I dunno clint, the lack of vitriol and jet flyovers was a nice change of pace!

What kind of portable DVD player did you buy for your trip? My Toshiba SD-P2000 has been used daily for my train commutes to/from work since 2002 and is still going strong

I bought a cheap Insignia at Best Buy. It’s a dual screen system with no battery. I wish I had known about your recommendation. I just assumed these things were disposable since my last one barely lasted a year.

I worked at Best Buy for just under 2 years and those Insignia Portable DVD players are disposable. If you buy the extended warranty, you’ll be using it for sure. Of course, when they replace it with the new one, you’ll want to buy the warranty again because the new Insignia will die, as well. So basically, you are paying $40 or so for a new Portable DVD player every year instead of the full price.

Oh, and Tom isn’t always bitter. He usually “Ranty” in some way, but that’s the nature of this podcast after all.

I did rebuild the Toshiba extended life Lithium-ion battery pack once but the player has performed well all these years.
Like Jim R says: you do get what you pay for …I bought a Kawasaki dual screen/dual player mobile DVD unit for our minivan..one player died then once screen.both right about the one year makr but well past the “warranty” period. now it sits collecting goldfish and Cheez-It crumbs under one of the back seats!

Got the following email from Rick with a little correction. He was geek enough to email me, and I am just geek enough to care…

“Listened to the podcast this morning…and just felt the need as a geek to correct your little discussion about irises (c’mon, you knew it would happen.) The iris is the colored part of the eye that actually regulates the amount of light that gets into the eye. The black part is the pupil, which is the opening that the light passes through. The cornea (which Dina said regulated light) is actually a clear covering over the entire eye. Anyway, like I said, it has nothing to do with AV, but I just couldn’t help myself. Regardless, keep up the good work. I enjoyed today’s podcast!”

I realized that about 6 seconds after it passed, but couldn’t figure out how to correct us without sounding like a complete dork. Thanks for taking one for the team, Rick! lol

Rick – You da man. I was making this weird face while listening to Clint say that an iris is a cornea for your eye? It’s good to know that even the all knowing Clint can make a mistake from time to time.
