AVRant #25: Yee Haw

October 25th, 2007

Dina has a fan and someone thinks that Tom is a corporate polo-wearing type. The world is just topsy-turvy. A new music challenge is issued. Tom will discuss this more on the next podcast. Jarret has a question about compression (one of our favorite topics around here) which leads to product placement. Tom touches on how Radio Sucks and reveals one of his deep dark secrets – this one about Nirvana (if you’re a fan, cover your ears and say “la la la la la” until it’s over). Are people getting disillusioned with HD? The guy at the auto parts store seemed to be. Can we come up with a business model for an AVRant dating site? We’ll have to work on that. Tom ends with a discussion about the Audioholics store including some of the brands that will be offered. BTW, Tom contacted YT Cracker for the music but the song is from a group he collaborates in called Spamtec. You can download their albums (for free) here.

I should’ve also mentioned that I only ever listen to radio in the car which is why things like Pandora aren’t really a mitigating factor in my assertion that the radio blows.

“White and Nerdy” is the best parody song ever made… period. Weird Al is the man.

I have complete videos of my band (The Existence) playing at our high school as well as a 1.5 hour benefit concert we performed to benefit a buddy of mine who was hospitalized after a really bad car wreck. The drummer and myself also formed again in college at Penn State under the name Entourage (I had a thing for ‘E’ words apparently).

We did Rush, Zeppelin, Queensryche (college), Pink Floyd, Crack the Sky, Styx…

I even have the videos on DVD – all digital and ready for uploading.

And, no, you will never see them. Mwuhahahahaha.

Clint, are you sure? Audioholics could use a How to on making a rock band and since video is working you have the perfect material!

Hi Tom and Dina love your show. It is very informative and makes me laugh as well. I have a comment on a show a few weeks ago. Tom made me laugh so hard because he was trying to exlpain to the audience what blu-tak was. Living in Australia I found this hilarious because here it is a product the general public are more than aware of. You can laugh at us though because when Forest Gump came out and there was a scene involving Doctor Pepper I had no idea what it was. Then it was released here. I loved it but most Aussies did not so now you cant get it here now ( bummer! ). And when E.T. came out when I was a kid I had no idea what M&M’s were, but of course you can get them here now along with the aussie version – “smarties”. Anyhow thanks for a great show. My setup includes a Sony Bravia X LCD, Denon 3806 reciever, KEF iQ speakers, Velodyne SPL sub. Much love from Down Under,

    Dean Murphy.

Thanks Dean for your comments. It’s interesting to hear of cultural differences like you describe. When I visited Turkey recently, a lot of my “jokes’ were totally missed because no one knew the cultural references I was making. Technically, the candy in ET was Reese’s Pieces and we’d never heard of them here either (they’d only been released a few years earlier). As for Dr. Pepper – it’s sort of hit or miss on this side of the pond as well. I don’ t know anyone that just “likes” it. It’s either they love or hate it. Thanks for listening.

In South Carolina, you often found Mr. Pibb instead of Dr. Pepper… Walk into a Publix (southeast US grocery chain) and you’ll find Dr. Publix… too funny.
