Video Calibration for XBox 360

March 2nd, 2009

While I haven’t tried it yet, listener Andy sends in this:

I was just looking around in the community games (XNA) section of Xbox Live and came across TV Calibration. Looks fairly basic from the demos, but for 200 space bucks ($2.50), it’s an interesting use of the community game space.

Kind of an interesting use of XNA and it might be worth mentioning on the show for Xbox owners. I wish it had a few more tools, but it’s a good start.

Andy, that is a great find and something that I’m sure to try out very soon. Thanks for the heads up!

I’ve noticed most games have a built-in system to allow for video calibration of black levels. That’s important since game developers are notoriously independent when it comes to standards.

That Xbox video calibration download seems like it mostly centers on geometry and dead pixels. The gradient pattern may be helpful but that depends on how well it matches the software playing back on the system.

Another good idea would be for Netflix to stream DVE or Avia.

Yeah, I’m not sure how useful this one would be but the price is right enough that even if it only helps a little, it’s probably worth it.

I wish Netflix would stream DVE or Avia but I wonder if they even could? With DVE and Avia it is all about the menu system and navigating to the right screen and running the test. There is no menu navigation for streamed movies. They’d either have to combine them into one stream or encode them as numerous different sort movies or episodes. I wouldn’t hold my breath for that one.

AVSform has some free tools you can download and share from a PC to access from the video library tab in the My Xbox section of the dashboard.

You can download the mp4 files from the thread below, but you have to rename the extensions to .avi for the Xbox to play them for some stupid reason…

Not the most elegant solution, but it gives more patterns to tweak on for free.

But yeah, if you have Netflix there is always that option.
