Lost Netflix access on XBox 360?

May 4th, 2009

Here’s what may have happened – If you haven’t used it in as little as a week (according to the tech support rep I spoke to), it can “lose sync” or reset. You’ll get a “service temporarily unavailable” message. This happened to me when I sent my XBox in for repair. You can call Netflix customer support and have them walk you through it or you can follow these simple instructions:

  1. Go to your XBox 360 dashboard
  2. Navigate to the System Settings -> Memory -> Hard Drive -> Games -> Netflix. Delete both the files you find in there.
  3. Go back to Video Marketplace and select Netflix. It’ll ask you to download it again. Say yes. You’ll get a new code.
  4. Go to your computer and navigate to Netflix -> Your Account -> Your Netflix ready devices and computers. Enter the code. You’re ready to go.

This should fix your problem. I did it over the phone but the tech support girl told me that you can do it manually as well. The manual fix might take a little longer to take effect but if you’re having problems with tech support or don’t like using it, this is the way to go. I was just surprised that a little over a week of non-use led to a corrupted (or whatever) account. I didn’t realize this was even possible.

What a hassle. I guess you’ll just have to buy a PS3 and use PlayOn instead 😉

Netflix used to have a limit on the number of devices you could have registered based on the level of plan you had IIRC. In other words, one person couldn’t have a netflix plan and give all their friends and family simultaneous access with one of the cheap plans.

Wonder if this is some outshoot of that. They may be making you register the DRM to make sure you only have that box. That seems more logical than what they told you. You do specifically have to register that particular device to your account, so if you sent it off for repair, you most likely got a different Xbox with different DRM keys…

And Rob, I think he uses PlayOn on the Xbox, so that doesn’t help him. Gotta come up with better excuses 🙂

(If they drop the price on the PS3 I might buy one myself…I’m struggling PS3 vs regular Blu Ray player…)

Unless they switched the serial tag, it’s the same box. I haven’t tried the PlayOn interface but if it is anything like hulu, f-it. The xbox one is much better than playon.
