Girls Don’t Care About Audio

February 26th, 2008

So I go to City Hall today to take care of some business stuff and I am ushered into a room with a woman who will help me get what I need accomplished. On her desk are a pair of Altec Lansing speakers. They are the tiny satellite kind that appear in offices all over the United States I’m sure. What was unusual about them (so I thought) was their positioning. One pointed at the side wall next to her desk (it was a corner-oriented computer arrangement) – the other pointed completely sideways. SIDEWAYS. Neither was oriented correctly to deliver any sort of coherent stereo image. I’m relegated to the fact that girls don’t care about sound. They just don’t. If they hear anything at all it’s fine. Now, it may seem like I am making a whole lot of fuss over nothing, but when I lived in South Carlina I had the same experience with a couple real estate agents. As soon as the speakers made any noise – they were done:

“All done, thanks… No need to point them at me.”
“Bouncing off the floor underneath my chair is just fine.”
“Oh, let’s just shove them behind my 20-inch LCD to get them out of the way…”

It goes on and on… Drives me nuts! 🙂

I bet if you hooked up those Altec Lansing speakers in your theater room along side your main HT system, sent your wife into the adjacent room, and asked if she could tell the difference, she’d be able to tell… Then you could honestly say, “My wife could hear the difference from the other room!” Isn’t that our real goal, anyway?? *laugh*

My wife is the same way. Her priority in speakers is “not too loud.” Those darn kids today aren’t much different: don’t care about quality but do want it loud.

I think this springs from intense ignorance. It seems to me that people think speakers are these magical things. Just owning them is enough. Placement and orientation isn’t important as long as they are in the same room. And in my experience, this isn’t limited to just chicks. I’ve seen guys that are the same way. One instance in particular comes to mind where I was at a friend’s house and was checking out something on his computer. Saw only one speaker. Asked about the other. It was in the drawer 🙄 . Don’t ask where the bass module was…

Yeah, not just girls. One of my coworkers just bought his second HDTV, a 50” Pioneer . I’ve never even heard him mention audio in any form.

Let’s talk about the people who buy a widescreen plasma and have a standard def picture STRETCHED across it, so the picture is distorted…. don’t get me started!
