AVRant #70: Inane Hotness

May 22nd, 2008

Tom has subwoofers on the brain. A rule about pictures. Tom is really looking forward to Fringe. Seriously. He’s not even kidding. Tom has a birthday wish and Dina promises to visit him in jail. Tom and Dina discusses an article about reasons to buy an HDTV now. Tom discusses his Logitech Squeezebox Duet review while Dina tries not to laugh every time he says the word “squeeze.” Tom says something nice about a Mac. If you’ve got Netflix, are you thinking about buying a Netflix Roku box? Tom and Dina discuss the pros and cons. Josh wants to know what the difference is between the anechoic frequency response and an in-room frequency response. Jeremy sent the pic below and wanted to know about dual subwoofer outputs. Benny wants to know about speaker delay and analogue inputs. This is a long one – we probably should have saved some of this content for next time. Oh well, live and learn. Happy late one year anniversary AV Rant. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

More fun with Dina's pic...

Can that be considered a Freudian slip?

It might be time to delete the comment that precedes mine. Anyway, hey guys, I love the podcast! Wow, Dina, you almost sounded interested in the squeezebox talk…………….not. It did seem a little long.

Tom, it’s time to go for the blu-ray. I can hear the reluctance in your voice but I have a feeling that once you’ve heard the uncompressed audio you will never look back. Well, maybe you’ve heard it, being a reviewer and all. It’s really incredible. I’m hooked. I think the benefits of the uncompressed audio are not discussed enough! That’s all for now. Have a great weekend.

Blu-ray is great… just not for more than $300 for a player that doesn’t offer all the main features.

Yep. Cost is definately an issue, especially when you consider the uphill battle it faces in an SD dvd world. I guess I would have thought you guys would talk a little more about the uncompressed audio available on Blu-ray. If you have, I apologize for missing it. You have one of the most comprehensive and informative websites out there. How about an article comparing the lossy and the lossless (I suppose now you can direct me to an article that does just that and I can go on feeling silly for suggesting it). So does your answer above mean that you guys do not have Blu-ray players? Just curious. Keep up the great work and keep those podcasts coming.

Greg – We’ve definitely talked about the joys of uncompressed audio before on the podcast but it has been a while. Perhaps it will come up again soon.

I know that I compared the lossy and lossless versions of 300 in one of my reviews. It wasn’t a systematic comparison compete with pie charts and all but really, it didn’t need to be for the review at hand.

Clint and Jim have PS3s, Gene, J, and I don’t have Blu-ray currently.

Fox – I can’t believe I just got that. I kept staring at that comment until Jim finally emailed me and filled me in. Fixed.

Thanks, Tom, I must have missed the previous talk about the uncompressed audio – well, I did catch the discussion about the PS3 and how some people say it is better to decode in the receiver vs the player. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on uncompressed audio, Tom. I’ll keep listening. Well, I’ll keep listening anyway…..it’s a great show!

It seems like too many people get so caught up in which channel is going HD or what satellite company has more hardware circling the globe that they lose sight of the home theater experience. For me, it’s about the movies! Uh oh, I’m starting to rant. Sure, I suppose it’s terrific to watch the latest American Idol, or, I don’t know, 30 Rock or some other inane sitcom in 1080i with dolby digital. Wait a minute, 30 Rock is actually funny so scratch that last part. But what about the movies!!! That’s what I’m after and the uncompressed audio gets us closer to the movie experience, and that’s the whole goal, right? Well, maybe not for others, perhaps just for me. For some reason, I don’t give a rat’s backside about the frickin’ (fill in blank) channel going HD because the majority of the content is junk! Time to get back to the movies, brotha! Wait a sec……………… brotha??? What the…. Anyway, I guess I’m just tired of hearing about the latest camera that can take a picture and send it to anyone anywhere and stores a million songs and lets you surf the web and download video. But wait, I think Steve Jobbs just had another idea so I’m sure everything now has become obsolete.

OK, enough of that silliness. One suggestion: I really like when you guys talk about what the latest movies you’ve seen. It seems like I haven’t heard much of that lately. Keep up the good work!

Ooops, got a little redundant. Sorry. Just delete my last paragraph. Or leave it and I’ll feel like an idiot…..too late. This comment thing is just too complicated. I’ll just go watch a movie.

    Tom,

Just catching up, and heard this podcast yesterday. The Netflix box is already shipping, and I can’t believe you’ve never heard of Roku. They manufacture the SoundBridge Network Music Player and Radios, I own (and enjoy) both of them. Check it out at http://www.rokulabs.com.
