AVRant #61: Super Dark Internet In-Ceiling Amps

April 22nd, 2008

iPhones are obnoxious. Clint broke AV Rant and admits it. Not all geeks are helpful (probably because we don’t look like Dina). What’s the deal with the Wii? Tom got a chance to play one recently and reported. Josh wants to know if he’s going to hurt his eyes by watching movies in a dark room. Kevin’s got a specific question about his setup that we really can’t answer but try anyways. Alex has a very important question. A listener comments on our discussion of the “super internet” which sparks some more ideas with Tom and Clint. Jason wants to buy an amp… Tom and Clint give some advice. Upgraditius is a terrible condition. A user has a question about in-ceiling speakers. Installers can be your friend. Clint went to the Rush concert and had a great time. Do you protect your hearing? Here’s that link Tom promised you. A new contest is announced – enter now to win something from here. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

Contest Rules:
This contest is open to people in the Continental US only. If you live on the moon and REALLY want something on our prize list and are willing to pick up the shipping, feel free to enter. Hey Clint, what kind of ear plugs did you wear for that concert? I use some 3M ear plugs when riding my motorcycle, but they are designed to filter out machine noise and let some of the vocal come through. You said that they were pretty flat for the noise reduction. Let us know. Thanks!

First of all, the whole “sent from my….” thing was started by Blackberry. I was surprised Apple actually “followed” somebody on something like this… Anyway, I can indeed change it so it does NOT say that, but choose not to precisely because it tweaks guys like Tom for me to leave it on there. And I am in my forties, but do not drive a Jag. More like a Toyota truck with 250k miles on it…

Clint – can’t believe you went to see Rush. I have seen every tour since Signals – but have yet to get to see Snakes & Arrows. Hoping to catch it later this summer. By the way, lots of that old cheesy video is sorta there for nostalgic purposes – most of it is from past tours, back when it was actually cool! They are now 33 or so years in as band (same members, have never broken up). Okay, so I’m a fan. Can you tell?

http://www.usspeaker.com/homepage.htm have some matching Tannoy ‘in ceiling’ and ‘in-wall’ speakers. If the speakers are going in the drywall, you probably don’t want to install something low end that you will want to upgrade before you move or otherwise leave the house. Same vendor have and Radian in ceiling speakers. All might go well with the Velodyne SV-1W ‘in wall’ sub woofer. It’s all free advice so you’re sure to get your money’s worth.

The earplugs I have are these:

The regular, not the ‘baby blues’…

Here’s the deal with the wii: it appeals to non-gamers. I think this is why it is so popular and will last. They are hitting a segment of people who would never sit down with a PS3 and play gears of war, for example. I don’t think they are targeting guys like Tom and Clint, for example.

Those etymotic er20 plugs are great. I won’t go to a Big Loud Concert without them.

I hate it when people do this, but I can’t resist. J, no one will ever sit down to a PS3 and play Gears of War; that is impossible.

oops. guess I just exposed myself as a non-gamer… Make that an Xbox 360…..

    doh!

I’m not much of one either, but as I said, I couldn’t resist.

J – I hear what you are saying but I think my original point still applies. These non-gamers also don’t have the dedication to stick around and support the console. It is selling so hot mostly because of non-gamers telling their non-gamer friends how great it is. Now that they’ve had a little time to live with it, that’s going to slow down. And once that happens, the console is dead. IMO.

I agree with you Tom. I read an interview where someone compared it to a viral video/web meme. They blaze brightly but most people play a month or two of Wii Sports, tell their friends how cool it is, and then just let it sit there on the shelf collecting dust. Then the friends perpetuate the cycle.

As a Wii owner I have to disagree. I play quite frequently. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is the greatest FPS ever. The controls are so much more natural. Trying to aim a gun with a control stick, the way one does in Halo for example, is a major PITA. With the Wii controls, you just point the way you would naturally point a gun and move with the control stick. Much more intuitive than a control pad. I will concede that MP3 is missing the online play component, but I’ve heard other titles like Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Mario Kart have online play and are great titles. I’m sure MP4 will have online death matches. And online play with Wii is FREE, unlike the subscriptions that required for xbox live.
