AVRant #37: Sounds Better than Real Life

January 17th, 2008

Tom’s back from CES. Super nap power GO! Tom sends a personal message to Gene. Dina threatens Tom. Tom gives some love to the listeners (that’s you). Guys have a fantasy about everything and Tom discusses one. Dina brings up a topic. I know, shocking. She also inadvertently reveals her age (kinda). Let’s talk about the new season of shows (both of them). Tom is like Switzerland. AppleTV is discussed in brief along with the HD DVD demise. What does Universal mean when they say that they’re still supporting HD DVD? Listen in to find out. Tom went to T.H.E Show at Alexis Park (the esoteric show at CES) and he’s got a few things to say about cable elevators, cable sizes, aluminum, and high end designs. How do these high end speakers end up selling? Tom has a theory. How to ship expensive amps. Tom listened to some Magnepans and gives his impression. Tom shares a couple of Emails that Audioholics got. Here’s the link to vote for us on Podcast Alley and thanks for listening.

If you guys haven’t heard a demo of the Magnepan speakers before, you should really try them out. In all honesty, they are the best speakers I have personally listened to. Yes, there is a sweet spot, and if you aren’t in it, then the sound image is messed up. These are NOT for home theater in my opinion, but if you have an easy chair and a big room and want very good speakers, then Magnepan will do you right. I hope you guys get signed up for a review. I am sure you will love them for single person stereo music listening.

OH, and you know what? I am thinking about making some cable elevators and selling them. They’ll look just like concrete blocks that you can buy at a local hard ware store, only I’ll duct-tape some AA batteries to them to make sure they are biased correctly. It’ll be just like using your cables in outer space! *grin*

OK, just so I can get this out of the way, we recorded that Wednesday morning right when the Macworld announcements were being published. One I read said that the new 2.0 box would have a DVD player. The report was wrong (and now changed). There will be no DVD player on the AppleTV.

Tom the name of those robot speakers are MBL from Germany. The reason companies tout no need for a center channel is to boast how well they image. The problem with that is it only happens at one very narrow location.

    Good podcast guys!

Tom, come on down! Got about 5 pounds of Kona peaberry to help you reach “breakpoint caffeination”. Also got about a case of Upshot left. Guaranteed to get ya’ jacked up.

Remember, giving up something is for quitters.
