AVRant #30: Listener Appreciation Day

November 29th, 2007

Welcome. Dina starts off this Podcast with a threat more horrible than any you can imagine. It’s listener appreciation day around here and Tom and Dina address many of your emails and questions. They tackle easy questions like “Why am I seeing banding on my plasma” and “How to interpret the HQV results” to the tough ones like “What do I say to my wife who wants to move my speaker so she can put a mini-Christmas tree in the Home Theater.” All this, and more, from your minds, to our mouths, to your ears, back to our minds where we think we should have thought about all this a little more, back to your mind where you’re wondering how your heard our mind… it’s a vicious circle… or tetrahedron or something. Well, thanks for listening.

So, Tom, if you have your 360 back, are you ready for me to kick you butt some more? Either that, of finish the scenario? *grin*

  2. November 29th, 2007 at 17:44 | #2

I’m ready for both but not tonight. Might be a couple of days. Keep your eyes peeled. I’ll be online eventually.

Hey Tom i think you may have had it backwards today during the podcast you said that the ps3 is louder than the xbox 360. My 360 sound’s like a jet turbine compared to my ps3.
Hey tom do you think you can give me your gamertag for xbox live and maybe someday you will get a ps3.Good show

I think I’m the problem. Of all of us I’m the only PS3 possessor (it’s a review loaner for some games I reviewed) and mine sounds like a C150 landing in my theater room.

From what I’ve been told my fan may be rigged to go on sooner and stay on longer than ‘stock’ units. The unit came in a brown box and not retail packaging so who knows…

But MINE is much louder than my 360. Heck, this PS3 is louder than the 360 with the Nyko… which I of course removed last week… 🙂

  6. November 29th, 2007 at 23:39 | #6

that would make sense cause that is what i think they use at my best buy which sounds loud stuck in that nonvented clear box. I own 2 ps3’s a launch 60gig and a new 40gig. I rarely ever hear them otherwise i wouldn’t use them as my blu-ray player’s. I find my toshiba hd-a1 hd-dvd player is louder then them.
My brother has gone through 4 xbox 360’s and i am still on my launch system, I guess i got lucky.

Hey Clint and Tom i was wondering what you guy’s thought of my HT system’s and what you think i may be missing. I have had 6 hdtv’s but i think i’m happy now. I don’t think they are all that bad for a 25 year old. There are some thing’s i didn’t list but you get the idea.

I am new here but is there a way for other people to view our bio’s. Cause that’s where i put all my equipment in my home theater systems.

  8. November 30th, 2007 at 11:16 | #8

I was wondering that too. I can see your bio but I don’t know how others can. Just another on the vast list of things to fix on this site. Anyhow, your gear looks great to me. I’m sure either one of your setups would blow away 90% of the people out there. The most important thing is how it sounds (and looks) to you. You sure are bringing up the average number of high def players all by yourself aren’t you?! 🙂

Out of the 6 completely different home theater system’s i have had, I am by far happiest with what i have now.The Mythos ST’s are the best speaker’s i have ever heard personally.
The way i see it, is your equipment can only look and sound as good as your source can output. So that would be why i have the high def players. They provide the great dvd playback, outstanding high def playback and they are the great cd/sacd players. The ps3 is imho the best blu-ray player out there and it is the only one capable of going profile 2.0, it just a update to add dts master audio decoding.

Tom, dude, re the banding question you had you may find the following wiki link useful; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posterisation

Now you can impress the ladies with even bigger words. It hasn’t got an acronym though which may, or may not, be a bit of a bugger. 😀

At first I thought that was ‘poserisation’ and that you were insulting me 😯 ! LOL!

I left you a voicemail. Short version, per your query, the Oppo 981 blows away the SD-DVD performance of the A2. With most titles not available in HD-Disc, I’d buy an Oppo before I bought an HD player (heresy, I know).
