AVRant #24: A Hurricane of Sound
Tom starts off talking about the Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player he’s reviewing and gives a quick preview, reveals AVRant’s first official stalker (aside from Lea who seems to have given it up), and how one of the listeners is trying to take hiss job. How much of the movie do you miss if you watch it full screen instead of letterboxed? At Tom’s house 100% because his home is a “no full screen” zone. Tom and Dina talk about the Audioholics party with Dina telling a sort of creepy nerd story and Tom talks about his brother’s wedding (yes, it’s relevant – except for the Carl’s Jr. part). Tom gives some background on his latest editorial and pretty much gets works up into a frenzy which actually gets Dina angry. This is an extra long episode. Thanks for listening.

Hey Tom it’s Matt. I was just wondering if you dislike all “omni-directional” speakers or just the ones you were talking about? I was just curious. Have you ever heard any of the larger Mirage speakers? If so what was your impressions of them.
While Tom didn’t let us know the manufacturer of these [Omni-polar] speakers the described design sounds a bit silly especially compared to more “conventional” omni-polar speakers which when implemented properly (with correct room treatments and placement) are great.
As far as the aluminum speakers go, I have seen them before and if done well it is pretty cool and if implemented properly there can be a complete removal of cabinet resonance which lessens the coloration of the speaker. The review method is pretty cool though, fly me to you guys and I will check them out in YOUR facilities with no real reference…hah.
Ohh yeah, Tom watch out for Jim, I live near him and he is an evil man. He once told me he was going to review your reviews so we, the readers, can get a good perspective of your crazy biases, after all I love it when my cables get up and dance for me :).
Tom, I knew the symbol on her shirt was the chemical structure of caffeine and Dina said somebody else had told me. 🙁
Oh, and you had to feel sorry for D & J after driving all the way down from BFN Carolina only to help Clint set up the podcast equipment with till 1AM. Of course, only AFTER he was done interviewing the entire hotel staff amd guests.
Mirage aren’t fully omni-directional. They have forward firing drivers and everything. True omni-directional speakers are good for sound reinforcement – filling a large area with sound. You put them in the middle of the room and play some elevator music. Great for businesses and such? Oh yeah. Would work for surround speakers in a pinch? OK, I’ll buy that. Work for front speaker in a home theater or 2-channel environment? Not a chance. Unless you wanted to treat the front of the room to absorb all that sound directed toward it. And that sort of defeats the whole purpose doesn’t it?
Major – Dina’s untrusting by nature… at least she has become since working with me. I don’t know why that would be…

I also watch ATHF:MFFT last weekend. It was weird watching an hour-and-a-half version of the show. I wished I gone to the theater to see it. I think it would have been as fun as The Simpsons Movie.
Tom, I am takin’ you down! Well, in Halo 3, if you have the guts! As far as audioholics? Well, I don’t want your job, but I want one just like it… Except for the extreme sarcasm; I think I would have a break down or something if I kept it up as long as you can.
Jarret – Cool, thanks for the update. The ATHF movie was cool but I agree, at the theater with a bunch of fans would have been a lot better.

It’s about 3:30 pm and I am sitting in front of my computer at work. I am wondering why no code has appeared in front of me for the last many days. I am a computer programmer you see… So I am thinking to myself, “What’s Tom doing?” He’s probably taking a nap, or basking in the glory of some audio/video junk. Perhaps he finally has his copy of Halo3? Cause he needs to practice. Practice practice! In any case, I’ll still be sitting here at my computer trying to force myself to program. But I know it’s OK, because one day soon, I’ll teach Tom a lesson. That is, if his computer hasn’t already pummeled him with some Blue Screen of Death as he attempts to edit the next podcast…
