AVRant #19: What’s the Best System You’ve Ever Heard?

September 26th, 2007 Leave a comment Go to comments

This week is a hodgepodge of information. Tom and Dina start off talking about movies which brings up a pet peeve of Tom’s: buying movies simply because of good sound. Tom touches on how to solve your buzzing problems. The age old “is bigger better?” question is definitively answered by Tom… sort of. What’s the best “price is no object” system? Tom reveals it. Mike wants to know if there is a DVD player out there that will skip the FBI warning screens. Tom talks about Escient and Helios. Thanks for listening!

The Oppo DVD players will skip warnings, promos, and other junk. Oppo calls the feature “Direct Play”, it seems to work on most of my DVDs. More info here

I love ya Tom but from now on, leave the movie reviews to Dina. I didn’t love the movie Shooter, but having a black guy and a white guy in the same film doesn’t make it like another film. To even draw that connection seems a bit asinine to me.

What’s up with “you can make a good movie, or you can make a movie with a message.”? Hello…didn’t you just see “Dr. Strangelove”?

I didn’t much care for “The Last Mimsy” either. However, I thought the best sound effects were in the scene on the beach, when the sounds of the bugs & stuff was swirling around and fading in & out like some kind of weird radio.

And no, I didn’t buy the movie just for that.
