AV Rant #614: Is Dolby Vision a Big Deal?

October 26th, 2018

Our Listeners of the Week are Lemuel and Chad for their donations, our 74 Patreon Patrons, and Lemuel (again) for letting Accessories4Less know his Focal Little Bird and Super Bird speaker purchase was our recommendation.

In the news, Vizio, TCL, and LG responded to the current state of Dolby Vision on the Xbox One S & X.

Damien D. and Jackson L. let us know how the Apple TV 4K responds to being plugged into multiple displays, and what its Netflix interface is like compared to older Apple TV models.

0:12:12 Josh S. gets our recommendation for a JVC DLA-RS420 (aka X570) projector, and our suggestion to mount it on a shelf on his back wall due to its large placement flexibility.

0:19:57 Chris H. gets some more thoughts on Ascend Acoustics HTM-200SE vs. NHT SuperZero 2.1 speakers.

0:27:33 Luke K. wants a 55-inch, 4K HDR TV for under $1,000, so we recommend the Vizio P55-F1, and we also discuss our opinions on buying refurbished TVs

0:31:11 Terry G. has two subwoofers and thinks his bass sounds really good, but we made him worry that it isn’t absolutely optimal when we talked about sending multiple subs a mono signal vs. time aligning each subwoofer the way Audyssey SubEQ HT automatically attempts to do.

0:41:26 John D., Allen G., and Lemuel G. all ask about our pick for the best Ultra HD Blu-ray player to mate with a projector, including the Sony UBP-X800, which we like for HDR to SDR conversion, and the Panasonic UB820, which is our new go-to for HDR processing.

0:48:46 Ilango T. and David C.get a reminder that we recommend the “UHD friendly” Asus BW-16D1HT internal Ultra HD Blu-ray drive for use with MakeMKV, but we also strongly recommend reading the MakeMKV UHD drives forum for the latest status on support.

0:52:20 Brannon M. loves the combination of his Ascend Horizon RAAL speakers and Denon X4400H Receiver. He needs speaker stands, so we recommend SanusMonoprice Monolith, or pedestals from Ascend. And we talk a bit about side wall absorption panels.

0:59:55 Miles W. asks about bi-amping and Sewell Strike banana plugs.

1:05:35 Joe K. is wondering if a subwoofer swap or adjustments to his placement and setup could yield further improvements to his bass.

1:17:54 Karl R. is curious why AV Receivers would be IMAX Enhanced.

1:24:31 Christian A. wants an AV Receiver for around $500, so we recommend the Denon AVR-X3400H from Accessories4Less, or the Onkyo TX-NR787 if he wants 5.2.4, or the Marantz SR6012 if he wants 7.2.4.

1:27:52 Chad B. wants in-ceiling speakers with a sealed back, so we suggest the Monoprice Caliber speakers with their ABS Enclosures, while mentioning alternatives such as: Monoprice Alpha with their Metal Enclosures, or RBH Visage VA-615 with BC-6R Back Cans.

1:32:12 Tyler M. is building his first dedicated theater room, so we discuss seating distance, screen size, false walls, seating risers, wiring for Atmos, waiting to buy an AV Receiver, and we have a lengthy talk about DIY speakers and subwoofers.
