AV Rant #217: Topic List

January 27th, 2011

Tom and Liz try out a new format. What do you think? Tom immediately goes off topic to talk about his Aperion Audio Verus Grand review. Also on tap, ceramic paper speakers (of a sort). Totally dead and buried now but still an interesting topic. What is the new Nintendo 3DS all about and is it really not for kids? Regardless of what you think of Caprica, Internet ad pricing seems to be a bit off. Tom finally says something bad about Netflix. If you haven’t heard of this Superhero short (NSFW), welcome to the Internet. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley! Re: ads on Hulu. I watch Hulu on an Xbox 360 set up as a Media Center Extender. A media server on my computer called PlayOn places Hulu into my Xbox 360 using a Media Center plug-in called tubeCore. Long story short: PlayOn/tubeCore buffers enough of the the Hulu stream that I can skip their ads. For longest time I didn’t realize this was possible and sat through all of the commercials. I don’t mind watching commercials as a way of “paying for” the content, but the problem with the Hulu ads is that they are very repetitive. After I’ve already seen the same ad four or five times in one sitting, I don’t feel bad about skipping them.

    @Downtowner:

    That’s what I’ve been saying — I think we talked about it on one of my first podcasts. Hulu is great, and I don’t mind sitting through their commercials, but would it kill them to change them up a bit? I only watch my guilty pleasure tv on hulu — and there are only so many ads for kotex and secret a girl can sit through.

    Used to have a similar ongoing debate about adspace in the subway systems with a friend of mine. If you have limited funds, is it better to buy all the adspace in one station, or to scatter your ads throughout the system? Discuss.

    I guess it depends on whether you want the most eyeballs to see your ad perhaps one time, or fewer eyeballs to see it so many times that it becomes burned into their brain stems! 😀
