AV Rant #180: Get Off My Lawn

May 13th, 2010

Two videos this week (one from YouTube from Michael and worth a watch). A rant on iPod docks, MP3s, and Lady Gaga. Tom and Dina feel old. An iPod dock that is cool but not cool enough for the price. The FCC doesn’t mind taking VOD away from those without HDMI. DirecTV goes 3D in July. Samsung and Panasonic don’t play nice. Ebert hates 3D but Tom thinks it’s just a screen. A comment from Doug and an answer for Justin. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley. To see our (mostly) complete collection of show videos, click here. I did some research a couple years back on 8-Tracks because my Dad has an player and box of tapes in his workshop. I was curious to see if they had any value as a collectible.

I found out that 8-track offered the first surround sound format, Quadrophonic. Because only some tapes and the players were quadrophonic capable, they are supposed to be fairly valuable.

Quadrophonic 8-tracks were the SACD/DVD-A of their time.

I wonder if any of these early surround recordings have been re-released on a modern medium. Anyone know?

Back in Sacramento there is (or was, not sure now) a station called Quad 106.5 (I think). It was named such because it broadcast quadraphonic sound. Never experienced it myself but there ya have it.

Here’s a quote – “When KWOD 106 went on the air in the 1970’s, the name came from the fact that they were broadcasting “quadraphonically,” a short-lived idea that probably died because most people weren’t willing to buy 4 speakers.” http://daviswiki.org/KWOD
