AVRant #82: Monster Madness Infinity

July 10th, 2008 10 comments

This week Tom is out of town “getting tan” (we seriously think he checked himself in at a mental institution, but who knows) and Clint DeBoer fills in with Dina. Clint finds that he’s not “bitter enough” to really replace Tom for any length of time. Clint’s Monster Cable long HDMI cable shootout is finally published at Audioholics. The same week, Monster Cable sues a children’s clothing store. Clint thinks someone may need to revoke Monster’s obviously (to us) overreaching trademark to end this nonsense. Pioneer announces a 400GB backwards-compatible Blu-ray disc… we wonder if this is truly big news or not. Clint sees his first movie at a theater in over 6 months and is not impressed. Sony re-releases its 2.40 firmware as 2.41. BenQ makes a pretty darn nice projector for the money (the W5000). Thanks for listening – Tom is back next week!

TechCast #1: Denon Separates & Their Magical D.Link Cable

July 6th, 2008 5 comments

In Gene’s first Tech podcast, he grabs Denon’s own Director of Product Development, Jeff Talmadge, to discuss the new super AVP-A1HDCI pre/pro and POA-A1HDCI 10CH power amplifier. They discuss these products in great detail including what upgrades are to come for them and what lies ahead in the Denon product roadmap. They discuss Denon’s plan to release a truly universal DVD Player that also supports Blu-ray (but not HD DVD). Find out how their new $500 esoteric D.Link cable releases magical audio pixies to ensure you get the most out of these upper echelon products… or not. Dedicated forum support on these products can be found at: http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45050

Dislocated my shoulder during an install…

April 4th, 2008 5 comments

…Almost. Right now I have my arm in “sling” position, with any movement upwards causing extreme pain which shoots through my shoulder. I type this looking like a gimp. How did it happen? Well, if you go back a week ago, I was doing an install (one of a series of 5 I am doing for an article) at my buddy Frank’s house. He joked about falling through the ceiling and I commented that doing so is an extremely rookie mistake, and something that should not happen with any experienced person who has spent any time in an attic.

Needless to say, that sort of ramps up the odds of something going wrong – courtesy of one Mr. Murphy and his “law”. Read more…
