AVRant #83: The Formula for Suck

July 17th, 2008

Tom’s back and he’s extra bitter. Tom was wrong, the number isn’t on the site anymore. Somehow, it got deleted in one of our many updates. He’s going to fix that soon. Dina thinks she’s got Tom sold on an iPhone. She’s wrong. A story about Tom’s dad… it isn’t as bad as it sounds at the beginning. Tom gets mad at Denon. Tom gets more disillusioned with Comcast. Is Wall-e having quality problems? According to our listenership – yes. Where are terrorists now? On World of Warcraft. Microsoft’s E3 announcement – Tom doesn’t have to worry about the Roku box anymore. Why Tom still isn’t excited about it. There will be some very exciting news next week – stay tuned. Tom forgot to say that this was the last week for the tell a friend contest so you get an extra week. You’re welcome. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

    suckitude 37 up, 3 down
    1. An extremely precise metric measurement of the level of “suck” contained within a person, place, thing, event or action.
    2. The quality, attribute, or characteristic of suck. Measured in units of “suck”
    3. Used to refer to the magnitude in which something sucks

Without justifying the inscrutable ways of engineers and their theories of GUIs, you can avoid that preliminary screen by changing the guide setup default. It’s somewhere under menu-settings…

I used to listen to the HTGuys, but I stopped because it was too newb-friendly. You guys are newb-friendly as well, but you balance it out with an appropriate level of mockery and disdain.

First sale doctrine covers movie rentals. The media companies tried to charge premiums to rental companies in the days of Betamax but first sale doctrine states we can do anything we want with what we buy, including renting it out. Of course the DMCA may have undercut some of those freedoms.

Honestly Tom, shame on you for not knowing if the receiver supports Audio via HDMI, especially on a budget unit like that. Denon didn’t “disable” audio for HDMI, that model and the ones below it simply lack the necessary internal components to support it. Geesh!

Dave – So many definitions of suck, so little time. If you really want to experience true suckatude, watch War with Jet Li and Jason Statham. OMG – give me my 2 hours back.

jfalk – I figured that was the case but like I said, just there on vacation. Plus, isn’t that an option you should have to turn ON instead of OFF?

Austin – Thanks. I’ve been really working on my Disdain stat since I maxed out Bitter. Next I think I’ll work on Condensending… or maybe Cynical? Hmm… decisions, decisions… 🙂

Henry – I did a little research after the podcast and was extremely interested in how all that works. We’ll probably talk about that more on the podcast

Gene – Not everyone can get Jeff on the phone every time he wants to make a purchase 😉 I swear, I didn’t see the “no audio” anywhere on the specs when I was shopping.

It can be confusing with what receivers support these days but when you factor in the hardware and licensing fees its understandable that at certain price points you can’t support all the features you may need.

I haven’t looked at the manual, but it says it clear as day on their website.

When in doubt, just ask me. When I’m in doubt, I will ask Jeff 🙂

No mention of the contest this week. Did I just miss the winner being announced?

“When in doubt, just ask me. When I’m in doubt, I will ask Jeff”

And when Jeff is in doubt, he’ll make it up on the spot! lol
