If you’re not playing video games – you should. Think of the kids, man, the KIDS! Things you need to know about so you can catch your kids. Clint makes a prediction of the future of… games? TV? Both? GTA 4 review summary. Why do people love this game so much? Do you want pop-ups during your favorite TV show? Josh wants to know if he should buy an Onkyo or a Marantz receiver. Bob has a question about subwoofers and room size – specifically if the listening area is smaller than the total room volume. Daniel has a faulty sub… or does he? How to check. Las Vegas is doing dry runs of the digital TV switch. So far it is going OK. Jason has a follow-up question. A short discussion of bi-amping and bi-wiring. I thought you and Dina were just going back over some previously discussed topics until I noticed the scroll stating that this is #38 Imeem vs. Pandora. Wrong podcast. Software error?

Hey Tom & Clint,

You guys answered my question about the Onkyo vs. Marantz receivers. However, I was actually looking for your opinion on why the Marantz was so much more money. I’ve been told by anonymous folks on the internet that the difference between the two is “sound quality.” If true, why does the Marantz sound better?

While there theoretically could be some sound differences – it is most likely not something you are going to hear. Many people online claim SQ differences to justify purchases. If you’re worried about it, just find a store that sells both and do some listening tests. If you don’t IMMEDIATELY* hear a difference, I’d go with the Onkyo.

*I say “immediately” because if you sit there and try to hear a difference long enough, you will – whether or not there really is a difference.

Re Onkyo’s Pricing
I would think that Onkyo may be making less per receiver sold, but is hoping that if they sell *more* receivers, they’ll make more money overall. Just like how Toyota makes more money than Ferrari in total, but makes much less per car sold.
The risk is that Onkyo could end up like Ford and GM and make less per unit AND then not sell enough to cover fixed costs.
