Svelt! They called me svelt! Of course, I’d feel much better about myself if Dina had said it… oh well, I’ll take what I can get.

PS. Digg this story if you want others to know of this Monster Cable vs. Blue Jeans Cable lawsuit!

So Monster thinks it has a patent on bananas or something? 😯 lol
And yeah, CERN is a cool place. Worked there for 8 years in the 90’s during the LEP days just before LHC started so I can attest that the ratio of sandal wearing bearded nerds is quite high there.**
And Tom dude, Tim Burners Lee defined http and html and wrote the first web server at CERN and he did most of it on a NeXT box which will make J happy I guess.
**No, I never wore any sandals mtself.

    Thanks J.
They used to have the black NexT cube in a glass box just outside of restaurant 1 so all the Nobel winners could goggle at it. 😀
Funny thing, I remember having coffee with Tim and friend of mine that worked with him one afternoon in 1990 or 91 and I was thinking, “damn, I’m glad I’m working on the PPCS project because that hypertext stuff sounds really boring” lol

I wonder if by the time we have a grid speed network if movies will all be in extra-high-super-def and still take 3 hours to download?

  6. April 10th, 2008 at 10:39 | #6

Probably 3-D… and take hours to download.

It’s like getting a new PC. Was superfast when you first got it… What happened?

The only reason it’s now slow is that we load all sorts of software on it that was made for TODAY’S fastest computers. New version of MS Office, new OS (Vista)…

Look guys you are missing the point.
You are not looking at from an IT perspective more importantly you are not seeing it practically.

Network infrastructure in the USA is and has been lagging. It will continue to lag. One of the biggest telecom companies in the USA is in almost 56 billion in debt trying to roll out these networks to a fraction of the USA. The rest of the providers are scambling to keep up. With a slowing economy its not going to happen for a long time.

Its taken over 10 years to get 10Mb connections to a fraction of the country. You need more than double that to stream HD. To deliver this type of network across the USA would require federal support and trillions of dollars. Its not going to happen any time soon there is no incentive to do so.

Yes, movie content over IP is the future, no one disagrees with you.
But media is not going anywhere for a long time for the reasons mentioned.

I am supposed to have for real fiber right to my house by Sept. I bet there will be a bottleneck somewhere. Isp limits my bandwidth, netflix doesn’t send out full quality, whatever. As way cool as it would be to have all of netflix available whenever I want it, I don’t see it happening for a long long time.

Clint, that is exactly what I was thinking.
