Everyone has a broken Apple product

December 3rd, 2007

I just had something come across my desk today… It’s an aftermarket mail-in repair program from Blue Raven for iPods. You simply order the kit, pack up your iPod and it’s repaired for you in three days (not including shipping time.)

What struck me funny was a line the PR person used to promote the plan. And I quote:

“almost everyone has an out of warranty broken iPod.”

Really? And then it hit me as I took a mental survey. She’s basically right. Way to go, Apple. What other product or industry can you say that with? Let’s try a few:

  • “almost everyone has an out of warranty broken plasma TV.” – Nope
  • “almost everyone has an out of warranty broken microwave.” – Nope
  • “almost everyone has an out of warranty broken remote control.” – Nope
  • “almost everyone has an out of warranty broken fax machine.” – Nope

Apple is the bomb! As in: “you have 90 days until your product explodes.”

for the record, I still have my original 1st gen iPod which works just fine. Also at my house, 3 shuffles and 2 nanos, all of which are out of warranty and working well.

The apple-hating continues here at AH & AVR…geez.

I can’t imagine that the stats for other brand mp3 players is any better, but then again most people end up trashing those units I’m favor of iPods anyway…

I’ve owned five iPods through the years and still have three. Two of those I use daily (one at work, one at the gym), and I’ve never had an issue with any of them.

See, if we had been around during the launch of the original brown brick… er…. Zune, this would be a welcome change from all the Microsoft bashing. Still, it’s funny that the marketing people think that saying that your iPod will blow up after the warranty period is pretty funny. I’m sure Jobs loves to see slogans like that.

We could say the same for XBox 360. I haven’t known anyone who’s owned either Xbox who didn’t have to trade/send it in at some point, often several times.

My first two iPods have been great (sold one), my 45-day old iPod Classic just died. We’ll see how that process works out.
