AV Rant #234: Tom Screws Up

May 26th, 2011

Tom accidentally deleted his side of the podcast so this is take 2. Liz is back and talks up the Mini Cooper. There was a tornado but that’s no reason you shouldn’t have to return your cable box. A new Nook has both Tom and Liz intrigued. Who owns your review? Are deleted files something you’d like to share? Soup to Nuts is about loudspeaker design. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley! To see our (mostly) complete collection of show videos, click here. To get our iPhone app, visit the iTunes store. Download Tom’s ebook Bob Moore: No Hero which is pretty much available everywhere.

Speaker Truths:

  • Designers use the materials and designs they are familiar with
  • Materials have specific issues but any material can make a good speaker
  • Two main speaker designs – ported and sealed – again, either can make a good speaker
  • Don’t be tricked into thinking a speaker with more/different drivers is inheriently better. It’s all about the design
  • Listen for yourself – preferably in your room

@Liz a nook/kindle won’t replace MY iPad. Since i mostly use a tablet for games and videos…not really kindle territory.

So the plan was originally to get a Android tablet like the xoom or something similar, but they cost nearly what an iPad would cost. Eh…

So the other plan is to buy a 13″ MacBook Pro w/ an SSD drive.

    Thoughts?

Bought a Kindle last summer. I loved it and read more books than I had in years. Battery life was great and display very easy to read.

Once I got an iPad, I stopped reading books and never pick up the Kindle. Just downloaded Bob Moore to the Kindle and plan to read it on there.
