Ask AVRant #3: Calibration

Kurt wants to know about the BFD while Matt is curious about calibration equipment in general. Since these are both related J and I went ahead and answered them together. We cover not only what equipment has worked for us, but how to use it. If you like to tweak your system or if you want to be able too, this is the show for you.

Great show, nice to hear about the BFD especially since I am looking at getting one. Right now you can pick them upf or about 100 new and there is a program that will allow you to use it similarly to the RDES called Room EQ Wizard.

Nice to hear about treatments too as thats the other thing I am contemplating, I just don’t know BFD than acoustics or the other way around. I think acoustics will come first though.

My suggestion is always for acoustics first and then EQ to fine tune.

Thats how I was leaning especially because I found out my dad picked up a case of owens corning 705 2 in sheets for me dirt cheap because he has a friend who actually work with the stuff. Looks like I have a project for next week when I go home.

    Thanks for the suggestion Tom.

I agree on tackling room acoustics for the best result, but for many people, panels won’t fly. Plus, they take a while to construct. I like the BFD for people starting out because you can do it in an afternoon, graphically see a differnence w/ REW, and it’s cheap. Easy, tangible results that will probably get people interested in doing more with acoustics.

While we all know the right answer, telling folks to go buy boxes of fiberglass is going to scare many of them away. People need a solution that they’re comfortable with and that fits their lifestyles, which I think the BFD does. Plus, even with bundles of Bass Traps, you’ll still want EQ, so no money wasted.

The pronunciation of Avia is “Ah-via”. You’ll hear the people on the disc pronounce it during the “turorial crap” at the beginning of the disc.
